Divsion-III, Region 12 Final

DeSales (11-0) vs. Oakwood (11-0)

Location: Cooper Stadium

Result: DeSales 27, Oakwood 8

In a rain-soaked field the two teams combined for 9 turnovers, including 7 for Oakwood. The 8 points allowed by DeSales was the most points that they had given up all season to date. Running back Jamey Cua’s 22 yard touchdown run capped off an 80-yard, 12-play drive on the Stallions’ first possession of the game. On the ensuing possession, Robert Jackson recovered an Oakwood fumble that led to another Cua touchdown. Shawn Ream added 2 field goals (31, 36) in the final minute of the 1st half to give DeSales a 20-0 half time lead. Cua finished the night, rushing for 134 yards on 16 carries with 3 touchdowns. Four of Oakwood’s turnovers led to DeSales scores. Defensive back Paul Haynes recorded 3 interceptions for the Stallions’ defense, which held Oakwood to 62 yards of total offense.

Divsion-III, Region 12 Semifinal

DeSales (10-0) vs. Urbana (9-1)

Result: DeSales 27, Urbana 0

Through the first 14:36 minutes of the Stallions’ first-ever playoff game, Urbana had out-gained DeSales 136-14. DeSales finally got a drive going, thanks to two Paul Haynes’ runs totaling 20 yards. On the same possession, Jamey Cua took a short pass 33 yards that set up a 17-yard touchdown run by Haynes. It was the first touchdown allowed by Urbana in four games. Haynes finished with 76 yards rushing to lead the Stallions. DeSales linebacker Shawn Ream returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown, but Ream - the team’s place kicker - missed the extra point, which snapped his streak of 38 makes in a row.

Divsion-III, State Semifinal

DeSales (12-0) vs. Ironton (10-2)

Date: November 23, 1985

Location: Portsmouth

Result: DeSales 24, Ironton 19

Ironton scored on a 32-yard pass play as time expired in the first half and took a 12-3 lead into the locker room. Running back Jamey Cua scored on a 10-yard run just 1:40 into the second half to cut into the Tiger lead. At the end of the quarter, Ironton had once again built a 9-point advantage. In the final frame, the Stallions went on a 12-play, 78-yard scoring drive to get within two points at 19-17. On that drive, DeSales converted a 4th-and-2 when DeSales quarterback Mike Asbeck hit Jamey Cua, who took the short pass 16 yards for his 2nd touchdown. After DeSales forced a three-and-out on Ironton’s ensuing possession, Cua would score his 3rd touchdown of the evening on a 53-yard run. DeSales’ Dan O’Reilly’s sack on 4th down with 1:00 left clinched the victory for the Purple and White. Cua set a career-high 175 yards rushing on 19 carries. John Dennis forced 2 fumbles for DeSales, who advanced to the Division-III state championship game.

DeSales (13-0) vs. Orrville (12-1)

Result: DeSales 21, Orrville 13

Despite fumbling on his first carry, running back Paul Haynes finished with 151 rushing yards on 17 attempts and a touchdown to lead DeSales to their first-ever state championship. Haynes ran for 407 yards after the first 5 games of the season, but an ankle injury restricted his availability to just playing defense. Trailing Orrville 7-0, 8 minutes into the 2nd quarter, the Stallions only had one first down before going on an 80-yard, 17-play scoring drive. On 3rd-and-goal, Haynes scored from 16 yards out and Shawn Ream’s extra point tied the game at 7. DeSales would take the lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by fullback Tony McCormick, which was aided by a 40-yard run by Haynes. Orrville would score in the 4th quarter with 6:30 remaining, but opted to go for two. On the conversion attempt, a bobbled snap led to Dan Lauderback and John Crabtree’s tackle-for-loss to keep the score at 14-13. With 2:08 left, DeSales quarterback Mike Asbeck hooked up with Shawn Ream on a 3rd-and-5 for a 49-yard touchdown pass. It was the first reception of the year for Ream and it gave the Stallions a 21-13 lead.
