Matt Mangini and A.J. Kaltenbach each had 2 touchdowns as the Stallions jumped out to a 49-0 halftime lead en route to a regional quarterfinal victory. Through the first 21 minutes of the game, DeSales had outgained the Indians 235 to -21. Hillsboro finished with 97 total yards and 4 first downs. Mangini led the Purple and White with 105 yards rushing on 13 carries.

For the 3rd game in a row the Stallions got off to a great start, but this time it was their defense that set the tone early. Of the first 8 plays for Sheridan, three resulted in a loss of yards, one in a fumble and the other an interception. Matt Mangini provided DeSales with a 7-0 lead after taking advantage of a Sheridan short punt, with his 1-yard touchdown run. On the ensuing possession, Matt Williamson forced a Sheridan fumble that was recovered by David Knapke, which led to another 1-yard score for Mangini. Mangini then contributed defensively with an interception and returned it 14 yards to the Generals‘ 13 yard line. Chris Thomas made it 21-0 with a 13-yard score after the forced turnover and the Stallions cruised to a regional championship. Thomas later scored his 2nd touchdown after Joey Rodenfels returned a punt 33 yards to give the Stallions excellent field position. Thomas, a 1,200-yard back in 2004, finished with 78 yards and 14 carries.

Of the 96 playoff teams in the state, Clyde had the lowest scoring offense, coming in averaging 20.8 points per game, but the Fliers’ defense kept them within striking distance. With the Stallions holding onto a 10-7 lead with 3:25 remaining in the 4th quarter and Clyde at the DeSales 39 yard, Chris Thomas intercepted a pass and returned it 55 yards to the Fliers 14 yard line. Three plays later Matt Mangini hit A.J. Kaltenbach for a 17-yard touchdown pass and the Stallions held on to advance to their 7th state championship game in school history. DeSales struck first, early in the 1st quarter, after A.J. Principe’s 35-yard field goal, which was set up by a Mangini forced fumble, recovered at the Clyde 35 yard line. On DeSales’ 2nd series, Chris Thomas ran 22 yards on the snow covered field to give the Purple and White a 10-0 lead. Clyde would counter late in the 3rd quarter on a pair of Seth Caudill runs. On the Fliers’ scoring drive, Caudill followed up his 46-yard run with a 16-yard touchdown, making it 10-7 after the extra point.

All of the game’s points were scored in the 2nd half and in the end, it was DeSales’ special teams miscues and Steubenville’s Zach Collares which proved to be the differences. The Big Red blocked a punt for a touchdown, blocked an A.J. Principe field goal and returned a kick 35 yards that led to a touchdown. Steubenville quarterback Zach Collares ran 159 yards with 2 touchdowns and threw for another score. Six plays into the 3rd quarter, with the game scoreless, Collares ran 24 yards for the game’s first points. On the ensuing possesion, Darrell Longmire blocked the Stallions’ punt and returned 30-yards for the touchdown. After a successful 2-point conversion, Steubenvile led 15-0. DeSales would respond on their next possession as Chris Thomas took a Matt Mangini pass 63 yards and Mangini ran for a 5-yard touchdown with 4:30 remaining in the 3rd quarter. The Big Red extended the lead to double digits once again after a 16-play, 80-yard scoring drive that used 8 minutes and 31 seconds. WIth the clock being an issue, the Stallions went to the air and a Mangini pass was intercepted by Matt Belardine. Zach Collares ran for his 2nd touchdown to put the game out of reach at 28-7. Mangini finished with 88 yards on 23 carries.
