2009 OHSAA Playoffs

Divsion-III, Region 12 Semifinal

DeSales (8-3) vs. Tippecanoe (11-0)

Location:  Dayton Welcome Stadium


Result:  DeSales 54, Tippecanoe 14

For the second week in a row, the Stallions played a team they had never faced before and for the second straight week, it was all DeSales early.  The Purple and White built-up a 47-0 lead in the 3rd quarter after Adam Griffin’s 3rd rushing touchdown.  The Stallions out-gained the Red Devils 270-99 on the ground.  Nick Gentile and Robert Perrine each had a rushing touchdown for DeSales.  David Harper kicked 2 field goals, including a career-high 41-yarder just a few hours after scoring the winning goal in the Division-II soccer state championship game for the Stallions.

Divsion-III, Region 12 Quarterfinal

DeSales (7-3) vs. Bryan (8-2)

Result:  DeSales 45, Bryan 21

DeSales was playing in their 60th all-time playoff game; Bryan was playing in their first.  The Stallions jumped out to a 45-0 lead en route to their 9th consecutive Regional Quarterfinal victory.  DeSales ran for 303 yards, led by Adam Griffin’s 114 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Griffin also had a 62-yard punt return for a touchdown.  Quarterback Nick Gentile ran and threw for a score for DeSales.

Divsion-III, Region 12 Final

DeSales (9-3) vs. Bishop Watterson (10-2)

Date:  November 20, 2009

Location:  Dublin Coffman Stadium


Result:  DeSales 24, Bishop Watterson 10

For the first time in their series with Watterson, DeSales won their 5th consecutive game over the Eagles.  Watterson took a 7-3 lead into the locker room, but the Stallions took the opening possession of the 2nd half and marched down the field to take their first lead of the evening 10-7.   Watterson would tie the game at 10 on a 22-yard field goal on the ensuing possession.   DeSales, making their 6th straight Regional Final game appearance, would outscore the Eagles 14-0 in the 4th quarter, thanks to 2 Adam Griffin touchdowns, to advance to the State Semifinals.   Nick Gentile led a Stallions’ ground attack that out-rushed Watterson 314-103.  Gentile finished with 150 yards on a career-high 28 attempts.  Griffin added 89 yards rushing.              

2009 OHSAA Playoffs

DeSales (10-3) vs. Cincinnati Wyoming (13-0)

Date:  November 27, 2009

Location:  Dayton Welcome Stadium


Result:  DeSales 24, Wyoming 7

Junior quarterback Nick Gentile ran for 143 yards with 2 touchdowns and the Stallions advanced to their 8th state championship game in school history.   For the game, DeSales ran for 339 yards and held Wyoming to 2 yards per carry on 30 attempts.  Mitch Yinger and Mitch Herbert registered interceptions for the Stallions.  Those interceptions came against Wyoming’s Kyle Seyfried, the Division-III Offensive Player of the Year.  Seyfried was held to a season-low 186 yards on 9 of 25 passing.  Adam Griffin only needed 11 touches to get his 105 rushing yards.  David Harper, a First-team All-Central District Punter, had 5 punts for an average of 59.2 yards per kick for DeSales.

2009 Quick Facts

- 3rd straight CCL title (first 3-peat since  ’96-’98)

- DeSales finished as the #1 seed for the 3rd year in a row

- Head Coach Ryan Wiggins improved to 5-0 vs. Watterson

- Qualified for the OHSAA playoffs for the 16th consecutive season

- Defensive Lineman Travis Jackson was named First-Team All-Ohio and D-III Co-Defensive Player of the Year in Ohio

- DeSales won it’s 20th CCL title

Divsion-III, State Final

DeSales (11-3) vs. Youngstown Cardinal Mooney (14-0)

Date:  December 4, 2009

Location:  Massillon Paul Brown Stadium


Result:  Mooney 35, DeSales 7

DeSales made their 8th state championship game appearance, but running back Braylon Heard and the Cardinals were too much for the Stallions.  Heard ran for 178 yards and 2 touchdowns and the Cardinals took advantage of 3 Stallions’ turnovers and won their 7th state championship in school history.   DeSales quarterback Nick Gentile ran for 107 yards in the loss.  Running back Jake Edsinger scored the game’s only touchdown for the Stallions. 

- The defense featured 4 Big Ten verbal commitments (Chi Chi Ariguzo - Northwestern, Adam Griffin - Ohio State,   Travis Jackson - Michigan State, Chris Rock - Michigan)

- Defensive End Chris Rock recorded 15 sacks and was named Second-Team All-Ohio

- Adam Griffin finished with over 1,600 all-purpose yards and 18 touchdowns

- Quarterback Nick Gentile led the team with 1301 rushing yards
