The DeSales defense stole the show in this one, holding the Cardinals to 81 yards on 54 offensive plays (1.5 yards per play). Kyle Nugent’s 27-yard field goal represented the only scoring in the first half. Junior Quarterback Nick Gentile’s 56-yard touchdown run late in the 4th quarter clinched the win for the Stallions. Senior Safety Mitch Herbert had two interceptions for DeSales.
9/26/2008 - DeSales 20, St. Charles 10
St. Charles took a 10-7 lead into the 4th quarter, but the Stallions outscored the Cardinals 13-0 in the final frame for the win. Josh Kusan had a huge 2nd half to led DeSales and finished with 170 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns. Kusan ran for 158 yards in the second half. Senior quarterback Thomas Gentile threw for 91 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 90 yards for the Purple and White.

DeSales running back Ryan Clark ran the ball 6 times for 164 yards and scored 3 touchdowns for Ryan Wiggins in his first CCL game as head coach of the Stallions. Junior quarterback Thomas Gentile hooked up with Kenny Stafford 4 times for 122 yards and a score for DeSales. Gentile finished 5-of-7 passing for 159 yards.

DeSales opened up CCL play by racing to a 31-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 51-7 victory over the Cardinals. DeSales’ Chris Thomas rushed the ball 22 times for 195 yards with 3 touchdowns. Quarterback Matt Mangini threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Alex Stewart for DeSales, who improved to 4-2. Ryan Clark added a 93 yard run for a score and Kyrell Crook crossed the goal line from 2 yards out for the Purple and White.

Heath Killilea caught 3 Matt Mangini passes for touchdowns and the Stallions used the big-play in their 35-7 win. Killilea scored from 39, 26 and 65 yards out and running back Chris Thomas added a 39-yard touchdown for DeSales. Thomas finished the night with 115 yards rushing. O’Shay Mallory returned an interception 16 yards for a touchdown for the Stallions’ defense.

In a game that was supposed to be played originally the night before and at a different venue, the Stallions made it 27 straight over the Cardinals with a 7-0 victory. The contest was scheduled to be played on Friday night at St. Charles, but lightning and poor field conditions moved the game to Bexley to be played on Saturday night. The game came down to the wire as DeSales’ Mark Shirtzinger scored from 17 yards out with 36 seconds remaining on 3rd down and that was the difference. With less than 2 minutes left, St. Charles fumbled inside their own 25, which set up the game winner for Shirtzinger. It was a game that featured both defenses; the teams combined for 171 yards of offense on 99 plays and there were 11 three-and-outs.

DeSales remained perfect on the season thanks to Dino Razzano’s performance at quarterback. Razzano ran for 148 yards and a touchdown and threw for 175 yards and 2 scores as the Stallions moved to 6-0. Galen Powell was the recipient of five Razzano passes, totaling 140 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Stallions’ signal caller finished the evening 8-of-16 passing. Joe Bednarek kicked two first half field goals (32, 23) for the Purple and White who led 20-7 at halftime.

9/28/2001 - DeSales 35, St. Charles 28
St. Charles took a 14-0 lead, but the Stallions stormed back, scoring 28 unanswered points on the way to a 35-28 come-from-behind win. With less than a minute to go in the 4th quarter, on their own 12 yard line, quarterback Jack Rafferty led the Cardinals down to the DeSales 21. On 2nd down with time winding down, Brian Rotella sacked Rafferty to clinch the win for the Stallions. Down 14-0, Andrew Addington got the Stallions on the scoreboard, with a 14-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Dino Razzano made it 14-13 after a 94-yard run and an extra point tied the game at 14. For the game, Razzano was 5-for-5 passing for 155 yards yards, including a 54-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Addington. Razzano also added 155 yards on the ground. De’Wayne Penn contributed two rushing touchdowns for the Stallions.

The state’s 6th ranked team in Division-II improved to 5-1, 1-0 in CCL play despite being called for 16 penalties for 169 yards. Richard McNally’s 42-yard field goal was the difference at halftime as the Stallions took a 10-7 lead into the locker room. Jason Barnett’s 99-yard interception return for a touchdown sealed it for DeSales. Mike Love and Jeff Acree each had 6-yard rushing touchdowns for the Stallions. Matt Berndt recovered a fumble and intercepted a Cardinals’ pass.

The Stallions dominated the Cardinals from the start, scoring 44 points in the first half. DeSales racked-up 532 yards of total offense led by quarterback Aaron Powell’s 287 yards. Despite only playing a little more than 2 quarters, Powell ran for 115 and threw for 172 yards with 4 touchdown passes. Two of his scoring strikes went to Aaron O’Reilly from 27 and 41 yards out. Tony Moore also caught a touchdown pass and also ran for two scores. The Stallions held St. Charles to 99 yards rushing on 34 carries.

The Stallions captured the 1996 CCL title by holding a St. Charles team to just 41 yards of offense. Matt Stewart had 2 first quarter rushing touchdowns for DeSales, who finished the season at 8-2. Stewart finished with 86 yards rushing and Mark Sherrod ran 92 yards for a Stallions team who accumulated 403 yards of total offense. The Purple and White intercepted 4 St. Charles passes.

11/4/1994 - DeSales 64, St. Charles 14
For the first time since 1985, DeSales entered the post-season with an undefeated record after a 62-14 win over St. Charles. The Stallions, 10-0, finished the regular season unbeaten for the 5th time in school history. Brady Mangini led the Purple and White by scoring 3 times (30, 8, 18). Matt Stewart only needed 3 carries to get his 128 yards, thanks to 2 touchdown runs from 50 yards or longer. Marc Gentry came up big on special teams - returning a blocked punt and a kickoff back for Stallions’ scores. Gentry’s 65-yard kick return for a touchdown was a part of 23 points scored by DeSales in the 2nd quarter. With the win, the Stallions edged Steubenville for the top seed in Region 11.

In their final game of 1993, the Stallions blanked St. Charles 40-0. DeSales finished 6-4 overall, 1-1 in CCL play. Dan Paolini crossed the goal line 3 times for DeSales. Brady Mangini ran for 113 yards and had 2 touchdown runs in the 2nd quarter to help build a 21-point halftime lead. Greg Roberto caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Stallion’s quarterback Matt D’Orazio.
11/6/1992 - DeSales 33, St. Charles 21
DeSales’ two-year playoff run comes to end, but the Stallions finish the year on a high note by jumping out to a 27-7 lead before winning 33-21. The Stallions received a 3-yard touchdown run by quarterback Brian Emmerling and an 8-yard scoring run by Brady Mangini in a 14-0 first quarter lead. Mangini and Emmerling each scored again in the 2nd quarter, making it 27-7 DeSales. The Purple and White blocked 2 Cardinals’ punts. Dan Paolini’s 142 yards rushing led the Stallions, who finished 1992 at 5-5.

Chad Young and Steve Smith had first half touchdowns to help build a 14-0 lead at halftime for DeSales, who went on to win 21-7 and finish the season at 8-2 in addition to winning an Ohio Catholic League title. With the score 14-7 in the 4th quarter, Smith broke a 78-yard run for a touchdown to clinch the game for the Stallions. Smith finished the game with 143 yards rushing.

For the second straight season and the sixth time in school history, the Stallions finished the regular season undefeated. DeSales’ defense dominated St. Charles, holding the Cardinals to 21 yards rushing and captured their 2nd straight CCL title. The Stallions, 10-0, were led by Gary Berry and Adam Rader, who each had two touchdowns. Berry ran for 119 yards with a score and also had a 43-yard punt return for a touchdown.
10/3/1999 - DeSales 24, St. Charles 14
DeSales rallied from a 14-10 deficit at halftime by scoring 14 unanswered points and moved to 5-1 overall, 1-0 in CCL play. Jason Barnett’s interception at his own 3 yard line midway through the 4th quarter helped preserve the win for the Stallions. Ron Bradley had a 14-yard touchdown run and Chris Mahaffey threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Mike Love for DeSales, who ran for 165 of their 213 total yards in the 2nd half.
10/1/2010 - DeSales 20, St. Charles 6
The Cardinals struck first with a 21-yard field goal, but DeSales took the lead for good after a 3-yard touchdown run by quarterback Nick Gentile. The Stallions took a 7-6 lead into the break. On two separate occasions in the first half, the Stallions held the Cardinals to field goals after taking their drives inside the DeSales 15-yard line. The Purple and White would add to their lead thanks to two Anthony Ciammaicella field goals. DeSales out-scored St. Charles 13-0 in the 2nd half, including a 1-yard Warren Ball touchdown run. Gentile led the game with 129 yards rushing as the Stallions won their 7th CCL game in a row.

Warren Ball ran for 132 yards and a touchdown in the second half to lead the Stallions to their 35th consecutive win over St. Charles. Ball finished the game with 171 yards and 2 scores as DeSales improved to 3-3 overall, 1-0 in CCL play. St. Charles added a late touchdown in the 4th quarter on the reserves and it was the first time since 2007 that the Cardinals scored on the Stallions in the 2nd half. The Purple and White held a 301-200 total yards advantage.
